Neighborhood Clean-Up!

March 20, 2011

Last week, Room 14 went for a walk around our school to do a little community service and clean up the neighborhood. We kept track what kind of pollution we found. We were aghast that in the short distance we traveled, there was so much garbage! In the weeks to come, we’ll be learning about what we can do at home and at school to take better care of our environment. Enjoy the news report (by Ruby, Serina and Ethan) and the pictures!

Germs!

March 9, 2011

For the past couple of weeks, Room 14 students have been transforming into Germ Experts! Here are some pictures from our germ science experiment. We made hypotheses about which place in our classroom was the germiest of all, then used petri dishes with agar to observe and conclude which hypothesis was correct! The nominations for the top 5 germiest places were: soccer ball, trash can, keyboard, name sticks, and hand sanitizer top. And the winner…. the trash can! Enjoy the pictures!

D.E.A.R. Day

March 4, 2011

Wednesday, March 2 was Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day! Oakland Councilmember Libby Schaaf came in as a guest reader as we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday together by listening to a read-aloud of The Sneeches and enjoying reading time in our PJs. Enjoy the slideshow!

Painting & Real World Division

January 7, 2011

This past week, we finally painted our CA Salt Dough Maps (click here to see the pictures). We also worked in our groups on some real world division problems – how to split different amounts of money equally among our group members & how to share cookies equally so that no one complains of unfairness!
